What we are looking for

We seek an experienced and dynamic General Counsel to join our team. The General Counsel will provide strategic legal advice to the company's executive team, manage all legal affairs, and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.


What does the job involve

Legal Strategy and Advice:


  • Develop and implement legal strategies to support the company's business objectives.

  • Offer timely and practical legal advice to the executive team on corporate governance, contracts, intellectual property, employment law, regulatory compliance, and litigation.

  • Identify and mitigate legal risks to the company.

Contract Management:


  • Manage contract drafting, review, and negotiation for internal, commercial, vendor, licensing, and partnership agreements.

  • Ensure contracts follow applicable laws and company policies.

Corporate Governance:


  • Support the board of directors and executives by advising on corporate governance and ensuring compliance with best practices.

Regulatory Compliance:


  • Monitor changes in laws and regulations affecting the company's operations.

  • Develop and implement compliance programs to ensure adherence to applicable laws and regulations.

  • Conduct internal investigations as necessary.

Intellectual Property:


  • Manage the company's intellectual property portfolio including trademarks, patents, and copyrights.

  • Advise on intellectual property matters and enforce the company's intellectual property rights.

Litigation Management:


  • Manage outside counsel in litigation matters.

  • Represent the company in legal proceedings when necessary.

Employment Law:


  • Advise on employment law matters including hiring, termination, discrimination, harassment, and employee benefits.

  • Develop and implement employment policies and procedures.

Risk Management:


  • Identify and assess legal risks to the company.

  • Develop strategies to mitigate legal risks and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.


Qualifications


  • Law degree from an accredited law school

  • Admission to the Law Society of Kenya and in good standing years of experience practicing law.

  • Proven track record of providing strategic legal advice to senior executives.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of East African laws and regulations, focusing on corporate law, contracts, intellectual property, employment law, and regulatory compliance knowledge, applicable to the regions.

  • Excellent analytical, communication, and negotiation skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Experience managing outside counsel and legal budgets.
